The day was unseasonably cold, rainy, grey. I drove gingerly to a country club in Liberty City, Texas, careful to avoid bumps that might bounce the boxed wedding cake in the back seat too much.
Once I arrived and got the cake safely to its table, I shivered as I changed into a sleeveless black dress, embossed with a velvet rose pattern. I fussed with my hair and cursed myself for forgetting my camera, as I waited with my brand new sister until it was time for her and me and her other bridesmaid to head to the pavilion for her walk up the aisle to marry my little brother.
Like all wedding days, theirs was a whirlwind. In spite of the nasty weather, celebration prevailed. Amidst tears of joy, I watched my longest friend exchange vows with the woman he chose, the woman who makes his life complete, the woman he loves and will love as long as he lives.
Their lives have been beset by change, some exciting, some challenging, some downright devastating. Through every joy and sorrow, they remain together, and I am so proud of them, so happy that I got to be part of their wedding day ten years ago, so grateful that I get to be part of their lives now, even if it is from way too far away.
Happy 10th Anniversary, Daniel and Melinda. I love you both, and my heart celebrates with you from Michigan. I wish you another decade of love, laughter, and togetherness.
