For the month of May, I participated for the second time in a scrapbooking challenge called LayOut A Day or LOAD. Thirty-one scrapbook layouts in thirty-one days. As with the last time I did this challenge this past February, I got a lot done, and I enjoyed having the daily creativity to ground me. This month was different. I didn't have as much enthusiasm for it as I did in February for a variety of reasons. But the inspiration and the practice of generating creative action every single day was worth it.
And I had the idea in the early part of May, as LOAD was getting off the ground, that I could apply this type of challenge to myself in the arena of writing. Writers write, and while I am still calling myself a writer, I have to admit, I'm not doing much of the writer's work lately. Part of that has been my focus on scrapbooking. Part of it has been that I haven't engaged the discipline to do what I want and need to do as a writer.
Write.
In June, I am challenging myself to write one piece each week for publication on my own blog. That doesn't sound like a lot, but I want to start with a goal that's do-able. Two pieces of short fiction and two essays per month. If I find it too easy, then I'll increase the challenge in July.
Having a blog is a neat thing. I like having this place to come and express myself. At the same time, I haven't been good about keeping up with it, generating content. I hope that this challenge will help get me back in the groove of regular writing so that my blog will have more to offer, too.
If anyone wants to join me in the challenge, feel free.
Happy June!
