Deer Magick
June 22, 2008

This afternoon, Daniel and I went walking on the trails of Heritage Park. We took the camera, which Daniel carried most of the time we were there. He was finished taking pictures as we headed back on the trail that would take us, eventually, to the parking lot. He handed me the camera to put back in the case, which I'd agreed to carry in my pocket.

I started to put the camera away, then decided I should keep it out, keep it ready to take pictures. I said to him, "Just in case a deer comes onto the path." We walked a little ways and saw a dragonfly that I photographed. We walked further, the camera strap wrapped around my wrist so I couldn't drop it.

We took another segment of the trail, and I started to jog, Daniel keeping up with me. Suddenly, as I ran out of steam and stopped running on a steep uphill slope, there on the path in front of me was a beautiful deer. He looked at me, and there was this instant of incredible wonder, my heart leaping to my throat.

I was stunned.

Daniel didn't see the deer at first, and as I called his attention to it, the elegant animal started into the forest. I hurried to where I'd seen him go, turned the camera on, and started snapping pictures through the underbrush.

Isn't he spectacular?

After I finished taking pictures, I felt an exuberance rise in me, carrying me with it, aloft. I started to jump up and down like a delighted child, laughing excitedly. I had tears of utter joy and amazement in my eyes the whole walk back to the car.

Seeing the deer was surprise enough, but it felt like I had created the encounter myself.

With my very own accidental magick.

Maybe not quite accidental. Daniel and I just watched the DVD of The Secret, a popular book about the law of attraction. I checked the book out from the library many months ago and didn't finish it because it was due back to the library before I had the chance to read it. Daniel checked it out, too, just a few weeks ago, and he also didn't finish reading it, but he did find the DVD yesterday and checked that out.

Some of the ideas discussed on the DVD by a wide variety of philosophers and authors, all of them open-minded thinkers, I'd already seen illustrated in my own life and the lives of others I know. Someday I'm going to write a blog post about how Daniel and I found each other, which I know was a manifestation of our real magick, working separately at first, then together, to bring us into each other's lives.

This movie made me think, made me want to try out the principles of the law of attraction. That was where my mind was when I thought I ought to keep the camera ready in case a deer wandered onto the path. Encounters with Nature in all Her glory are magickal to me, anyway. Being able to manifest the appearance of that deer with a thought really felt awesome to me.

What else can we all do when we set our minds to what we want to bring into our lives?

Something to think about.
