Saturday was one of those days when I needed to get out, get away. Daniel and I got in the car to go where the day took us, and after a stop at a friend's yard sale, where we found a couple of great treasures, we were off to the eastern coast of Michigan.
Partly guided by a book I recently bought called Traveling Michigan's Thumb, we took interstate highways to M29 and followed it north through many small coastal towns. Our first stop was a place called Jiggers, where we enjoyed iced tea and an appetizer combo that was pretty good for bar food. The windows were open on a gorgeous sunny day, the twirling ceiling fans really helped to clear cigarette smoke from the air. The waitress was genuinely friendly, and the locals were talking politics at the bar. A bit of small town local culture.
On we went up the coastal road, finding our way to Marine City where we stopped awhile to walk around. A small bookstore was having a bag sale, all the books from a certain selection you could fit in the bag for $5. We didn't find anything we couldn't live without, but up the road a bit, we discovered Vera Grace, an antiques shop full of all kinds of treasures, including an old San Francisco souvenir book I picked up to alter into a scrapbook.
Totally looking forward to that project.
The last leg of our journey took us to Port Huron, where we've been once before. We stopped at a small roadside park where people were fishing.
That bridge to Canada spans the spot where the St. Clair River flows into Lake Huron.
We moved on to a bigger park and beach we visited with Daniel's brother in 2007. People were still swimming, it was so warm, even with the sign at the edge of the parking lot announcing the beach would be closed after Labor Day.
We are the happy couple.
Getting kind of hungry, we consulted our guide book and decided to try out a place in downtown Port Huron called The Raven.
The guidebook description of The Raven referred to it as a coffeehouse, and they do serve delicious coffee, but Daniel was a bit worried that the sandwiches would be the kind wrapped in cellophane, sitting in a glass case for days on end.
Oh, no.
We ate good. He had chili to start, and I had delectable mushroom brie soup. So tasty, with sandwiches to follow. Daniel also got one of his favorite things, an orange vanilla shake, which was also delicious. (He let me taste.)
Our return trip via Interstate highways went quickly, and we listened to Corey Hart and watched the sun go down. We were good and tired when we got home.
That's what I love to do, go exploring, and getting to be with Daniel just made it more fun.
